1. About SpellStar

SpellStar ("we", "our", or "the app") is a spelling practice app designed for children in Grades 1 through 6+. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our app.

2. Information We Collect

SpellStar is designed to work primarily offline and collects minimal information:

Information stored on your device (never sent to us):

• Kid profiles — names and avatars you create are stored only on your device
• Progress data — scores, streaks, and session history stored only on your device
• Settings — sound preferences, grade level, AI tier preferences stored only on your device
• Cached word explanations — AI-generated explanations stored locally on your device
• API key — if you provide a Groq API key, it is stored only on your device and never transmitted to us

Information sent to third-party services:

• AI Word Explanations — when using the "AI Explain" feature, the word and its definition are sent to our Cloudflare Worker proxy, which forwards the request to Groq AI. No personal information, child names, or user data is included in these requests.

3. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

SpellStar is designed for use by children under the supervision of parents or guardians. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

• We do not collect personal information from children
• We do not require account registration to use the app
• Kid profiles (names and avatars) are stored only on the device and never transmitted
• We do not display advertising of any kind
• We do not include social features or links to external websites within the app

4. Third-Party Services

SpellStar uses the following third-party services:

Groq AI (via our proxy)

When you use the AI Explain feature, word data is processed by Groq AI. Only the word being explained and its definition are sent — no personal information. Groq's privacy policy can be found at groq.com/privacy-policy.

Cloudflare Workers

We use a Cloudflare Worker as a secure proxy for AI requests. This protects our API keys and ensures secure communication. Cloudflare's privacy policy can be found at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.

5. Data Storage

All personal data (kid profiles, progress, settings) is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage. This data:

• Never leaves your device
• Is not backed up to any cloud service by us
• Can be deleted by uninstalling the app

6. No Advertising

SpellStar contains no advertising of any kind. We do not use any advertising SDKs or analytics tools that track user behavior.

7. No Analytics

We do not collect analytics data about how you use the app. We have no visibility into your usage patterns, session length, or any other behavioral data.

8. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the information stored on your device. API communications use HTTPS encryption. We never transmit personal information about children over the internet.

9. Parental Rights

As a parent or guardian, you have full control over all data in SpellStar:

• You can delete any kid profile within the app at any time
• You can clear all cached data in the Settings screen
• You can delete all app data by uninstalling SpellStar

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
